The silent powerhouse of motion control

Worm gears don't always get the spotlight, but they truly deserve it. These compact, high-ratio workhorses sit at the heart of countless machines – from lifts to conveyor systems – delivering quiet, controlled motion where other gear types fall short. Here's why worm gears remain indispensable in modern mechanical design.
What is a worm gear?
Compact design with high output: Worm gears are very compact yet still deliver significant torque, making them ideal for tight spaces. Self-locking: Worm gears cannot be driven from the output shaft, which makes them self-locking – useful in systems that need to be held in place without additional brakes or locks, such as lifts and winches.
Cylindrical worm gear

The most common type. Applications: conveyors, gear reducers, lifting equipment. Characteristics: straight cylindrical worm, standard worm wheel, simple manufacturing, widely used in industrial machinery.
Multi-start worm gear

The worm has multiple threads. Applications: automation systems, packaging machines, robotics. Characteristics: higher efficiency, faster output, reduced self-locking capability.
Worm gear types you'll find at Transmotec
